    PITCH: Mafia

Post by supercomputer276 on Mon Oct 24, 2011 3:23 pm

Because "Tales of the Last Train" is at a standstill and I've been wanting to play this game for a long time.

The party game known as Mafia was created in 1986 USSR, as a model of a battle between the informed minority and the uninformed majority. Since then, it's become a bit of a sleeper hit, and there are whole communities dedicated just to playing this game online.

While Mafia can get a tad complex, the basic rules are simple enough. The scenario is the players are members of a small town. About a third of these members, chosen at random, are secretly members of the Mafia trying to take over the town. The Mafia members know who each other are, but the remaining Townies only know how many mafia members remain.

The game cycles through two phases: Night and Day.
During the Night, players with special roles carry them out. In a bare-bones game, this just consists of the Mafia killing somebody, but other roles added in (such as the very common Doctor and Cop roles) also work at night and may go before or after the Mafia.
During the Day, the remaining town members (which include the Mafia) debate and vote on which player to lynch in the hopes of eliminating a Mafia. First person receive a majority vote is killed, although it is also possible to vote no-lynch to not kill anyone.

Obviously, when someone's dead, they're removed from the game and are not allowed to participate further. When a player is killed (either by Mafia, other roles, or lynch), that player's role is revealed, including the parts of that role the player he/she doesn't know.

The Townies and those aligned with them win when all the Mafia-aligned are dead.
The Mafia and those aligned with them win when the number of Mafia-aligned equals or outnumbers the number of Townie-aligned (at this point, the Mafia have full control over the vote).

While not GHS-related in the strictest sense, it is possible to make a game that's GHS themed; the ongoing Smack Jeeves games have had themes ranging from pirate to robot. Canon characters can be chosen as characters as well as fan chars. The primary thing I see keeping us down is getting at least six or seven people to play, but perhaps this can spur forum activity up.

That sounds like an AWESOME idea. I'd definitely join in on something like that! :D
